The critically acclaimed Occidental Children’s Theater will celebrate its 20th year with a brand new story, Chicken Little Shop of Horrors, and three adventurous adaptations of traditional folktales for a seven-week outdoor run in the Remsen Bird Hillside Theater on the Occidental College campus.
Performances are Thursday, Friday and Saturday at 10 a.m., through August 22.

Stuck for what to do for lunch? Bring the kids to the Promenade for food and entertainment! This annual summer series takes place every Friday afternoon with live music, classic board games, interactive challenges, and special performances like a street performer showcase, bike clinic, a performance by the Santa Monica Symphony Orchestra and more.
Escape from the cubicle and enjoy lunch at Downtown Santa Monica’s Picnic on the Promenade. This annual summer series eases locals and Promenade walkers with live music, classic board games, interactive challenges, and free services from Downtown merchants. Bring a lunch or grab-and-go from one of Downtown’s award-winning eateries and soak in the sun.

Have your kids ever seen the “Game of Kings” played live? It’s majestic and relaxing to lounge on a blanket with a picnic brunch or lunch and watch horses pound up and down the field right before you. (Players often let the kids on the field between matches to meet the horses.) Learn a little bit about polo, watch a match and then hike the park or tour Will Rogers old house (he was a huge horse and polo fan).
Matches are free and open to the public all summer. There are matches most Saturdays from 2 p.m.-5 p.m. and Sundays from 10 a.m.-1 p.m.

Shakespeare at the Old Zoo

The Independent Shakespeare Company does shows every summer at the Old Zoo. Here are some reasons to go:
1. Free Shakespeare! Come on! It’s free and it’s Shakespeare!
2. The old zoo is awesome and one of those things you’ve had on your list for a while, so go see it and Shakespeare.
3. Bring a picnic and catch one of the special shows throughout the summer where there are fantastic Players in the Park or Invertigo Dance pre-shows for the whole family.
4. Explore and play before the show.
This summer you can see As You Like It or Romeo and Juliet. Check the website to see which is playing tonight. Bring bug spray and warm clothes, as it gets chilly when the sun goes down. Blankets and low chairs are permitted, tall chairs and dogs are not. Shows run all summer Thursday-Sunday at 7 p.m.

Family Art Stops at The Getty

You want to enjoy the museum, and introduce the kids to the art. But you’re not quite sure where to start and what to do. Well… here! Family Art Stops has a plan for you:
A gallery teacher will greet you in the Museum Entrance Hall and lead you to a family-friendly work of art. You might meet a Renaissance oil painting, a 45-foot-tall steel sculpture, or an opulent tapestry adorned with scampering exotic animals. You and your family will look and learn together as you participate in fun activities such as puzzles, drawing, role-playing, and even an artistic version of Mad Libs. Activities and works of art change frequently, making each visit a new experience.
The tours are free, but you need to sign up at the Information Desk beginning at 11 a.m. for the 11:30 a.m. program on the day you’d like to participate.

Situated in the intimate setting of the Hollywood Bowl Museum patio, SummerSounds features four different programs, each highlighting a distinct music tradition – a new show every week! Two performances daily.
SummerSounds opens with a taste of musical gumbo with bold brass, fiery improvisation and spirited rhythm in this celebration of the birthplace of jazz, featuring quintessential New Orleans music ensemble Treme Brass Band.
