So if you don’t know this about me, I like the sky. It’s like an old friend, it’s always there but it won’t pick you up at the airport. Spend an evening under the starry sky with astronomy professors and park rangers for a star party! There will be an astronomy presentation, constellation tours, kids’ activities and plenty of telescopes to check out the moon, Jupiter, the Orion Nebula and beyond. Don’t forget your flashlights! We use the beach all year long – shouldn’t we teach our kids to help take care of it? Join Heal the Bay’s monthly “Nothin’ But Sand” cleanup, this month at Will Rogers State Beach.
Some handy tips, if you’re planning to attend:
- Bring cash if you plan to park in the lot (there is no discounted parking) or come early to find street parking.
- Volunteers must be 13 years old OR be accompanied by an adult.
- Bags and gloves will be provided, but if you’ve got reusable garden gloves and bucket, please bring them.
- Cleaning up is thirsty work: bring reusable water bottles. Water is available at all cleanups.

The Golden Dragon Parade

Get ready for one of the largest Chinese New Year celebrations in the country as Los Angeles Chinatown kicks off the Year of the Horse in a big way. The whole weekend is full of fun activities for all ages, beginning with the Annual Golden Dragon Parade. Enjoy hundreds of spectacular floats, decked out cars, dancers and bands as they parade down the heart of Chinatown. The Lunar New Year Festival commences after the parade with cultural performances by some of the nation’s best Chinese acts.
The parade will take place on Saturday from 1 p.m. – 4 p.m. along Broadway and Hill Streets.
The festival takes place Saturday from 12 p.m. – 8 p.m. and on Sunday from 12 p.m. – 5 p.m

With the Chinese New Year upon us, again, (it seems like we just had a new year), there is a whole lot of fun to be had around this colorful and festive celebration. Head downtown to get your New Year on!
Dragon dance parades and shows, Chinese Taiji Quan classes, Kung Fu shows and audience participation classes, lion dance parades and history/culture lecture, and a “LEGEND OF THE DRAGON” show, all by Wushu Shaolin Entertainment. The weekend festivities, observing the Year of the Sheep, also feature keeper talks and special feedings for animals related to the sheep and goat families, including bighorn sheep (12 noon both days); ibex, a species of wild goat (1 pm both days); gorals, small mammals with a goat-like appearances (2 pm both days); and markhors, a species of wild goat (3 pm both days).
